The Town of Deer Lake is located at the intersection of the Trans Canada Highway and the Viking Trail on Newfoundland and Labrador’s west coast. It derives its name from caribou which crossed the lake during their natural movement from north to south.

Deer Lake has grown to become a regional service and transportation hub offering, shopping, restaurants, banking, medical and recreational services.  Deer Lake Regional Airport, which serves a large area of the island, is the forth busiest in Atlantic Canada.

Deer Lake is truly a four season tourism destination.  Nestled along the lake’s sandy beach is the municipal park, offering fully serviced RV camping sites. During the summer tourist and residents enjoy swimming, canoeing, kayaking, boating, and wind surfing on the crystal clear waters of the lake.  Top quality recreational facilities, community playgrounds and picturesque walking trails can all be found in the town.  Humber River Golf Course is a challenging and scenic 9-hole golf course built along the shores of the breathtaking Humber River.  The river, which flows into Deer Lake, offers world-class salmon fishing and Gros Morne National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is just 25 minutes away. The Newfoundland Insectarium, one of only two such facilities in Eastern Canada, is on the outskirts of town.  Deer Lake is quickly becoming the hub for snowmobiling in the province, a gateway to a fantastic network of groomed trails.  From Deer Lake, back country skiing and snowshoeing are easily accessible and downhill skiing is available at nearby Marble Mountain.
